Math Ideas for the 100th Day of SchoolDifferent Number Activities for Kids to Count to 100
Engage students in observing the hundredth day of school with creative math games, which reinforce math skills.
Celebrate the hundredth day of school with junior students counting to 100 and learning a variety of math skills. Calculator GamesStudents are placed into pairs and are given one calculator. One student dictates a variety of math equations to the other student who must use mental math to calculate the answer. The other student punches the information into the calculator to confirm their answer. Math equations begin at 100 and end at 0 or vice versa. Students are given a calculator and they are to write 10 different ways to count to 100 using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students use the calculator to skip count by 2, 5, and 10’s as well ask if they can skip count by 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and if not why. Students calculate the total by adding 1 to 100 in numerical order (1+2+3+4…+98+99+100=). Creating EquationsStudents create a word problem using the number 100 in the equation. Students must solve their word problem using words, pictures, and numbers. Students find all numbers that can be evenly be divided into 100 and show the different groupings. Students calculate 100 multiple equations, teacher should tell them multiples of 1 and 0 are not allowed to be in their multiple equations. Students use 100 numbers to create a math equation totaling 0 or 100. Students are able to use division, subtraction, multiplication, and addition. MeasurementStudents create different perimeters of 100 using cm or inch grid paper. Create a contest for the most unique perimeter and give a special reward to the winner. As well, place students in small groups to participate in the activity. Students create different areas of 100 using cm or inch grid paper. Students may work independently, in pairs, or in small groups. Students count 100 items and place in a jar. Teacher should have a variety of items of various sizes such as rice, dice, and lollipops. After the jars are filled a great discussion about volume can be initiated. EstimationStudents estimate the distance of 100 feet or 100 meters in small groups. Students estimate how many sit ups they can perform in 100 seconds or how long it will take them to do 100 jumping jacks. Students estimate how many words can fit on a sheet of paper. Students estimate the total of adding the numbers from 1 to 100 in numerical order. Junior students will enjoy the activities of estimation, measurement, and creating equations with the assistance of a calculator. Celebrate the 100th day of school reinforcing math skills.
